Whether you use an adoption agency, an adoption facilitator, an adoption consultant, a lawyer, or you work directly with birth parents, you are legally required to complete an Adoption Home Study before you can officially adopt.

Graceful Adoptions conducts state, child abuse, and sex offender background checks.

Submit Supporting Documents

Upload required documents to the Family Portal and distribute necessary forms (e.g., employee verification, insurance affidavit) to others for completion. Schedule medical appointments for the required medical verification.

Meet with the Graceful Adoptions team for your first interview.

The Home Study is finalized and provided to the family.

During our interviews, we will talk about the subjects that are required to be covered in an Iowa Home study. These include:

  • Your motivation for adoption and whether your family has biological, adopted, or foster children
  • Your family, extended family, and significant others involved attitudes toward an adopted child
  • How and when you will tell the child they are adopted
  • Your emotional stability and ability to maintain relationships
  • Your marital history, and assessment of your marital relationship, and compatibility of you as adoptive parent(s), if applicable
  • Your ability to cope with problems, stress, frustrations, crises, separation, and loss
  • Any medical conditions which would affect your ability to parent an adopted child
  • Your ability to provide for the child’s physical and emotional needs
  • How you will help your biological children and previously adopted children, if any, adjust to another child in the home
  • Your ability to give and receive affection
  • Your attitude towards the birth parent(s) and the reason(s) they place their children for adoption
  • How you will discipline your adopted child
  • Review any history of abuse (physical, mental, or substance) by family members and treatment
  • Your commitment and capacity to maintain other significant relationships
  • What age, race, gender, health, and post placement relationship you prefer

  • Tax Forms – 1040 for current and past year

  • Veterinary Records and Proof of Current Vaccinations for each pet
